Woodworking Tips, Tricks, Jigs, and Techniques #3

Custom cabinetry solves problems that standard box cabinets simply cannot address.

The premium placed on this type of construction and product experience gives our clients a chance to get exactly what they want or need and to make the most of their available space. To illustrate how D.P. Juza Woods & Fixtures’s approach to serving our clients differs from other custom cabinet shops, we’d like to highlight one such issue we encountered.

Planning and building units that have plumbing or electrical components within them can be tricky. Hiding or simply working around pipes or wires, particularly drain pipes and water lines, can challenge most shops. Not us. For example, if a drainpipe or water lines do not allow for a full depth drawer, most custom shops would say “you can’t put a drawer there” and simply make a false drawer front that looks like there is a drawer there and call it a day. Or they’d tell you that putting a set of doors there was the only solution, when drawers is really what you want. A lot of usable space is lost in order to accommodate such issues. Our solution is to create a drawer box that uses all available space.

In this particular example, our client wanted drawer banks instead of doors on the vanity so that it looked more like a piece of “furniture”, as opposed to a run-of-the-mill vanity. If there was nothing interfering with the drawer box itself, it would have been over 36 inches wide and 22 inches deep. But since the drain pipes from the sink were there, we didn’t want to make a drawer box that was only 6 inches deep. Over 70% of the usable space would have been lost.

Our solution was to construct a drawer box that fit exactly around the sink’s drain pipe and the water lines that the fed the faucet. By using a little forethought and creativity, we created one-of-a-kind drawers that gave our client exactly what they wanted. And since all of our drawer boxes have dovetail joints, we needed to plan accordingly so that the final drawer box not only functioned well in the available space but was pleasing to the eye as well.

At D.P. Juza Woods & Fixtures, we take a great deal of pride in not only giving our clients what they want, but we have the experience to come up with solutions to problems that most shops are incapable of offering or willing to do.
